What is KeepSolid VPN Unlimited?

Based in Ukraine, KeepSolid VPN Unlimited is a virtual private network service with a stated strong focus on privacy and freedom of information. However, it’s worth noting that the company keeps some records of connected devices and data consumption.

KeepSolid VPN Unlimited – Features and usability

The latest edition of KeepSolid’s Windows client provides a streamlined connection screen with a button to select your desired endpoint. A map displays endpoint locations and the geographic route between your physical and virtual location.

Hit the endpoint selection button and by default you’re shown your favourites list – initially populated solely by the default Optimal server selection option, followed by a list of all endpoint countries, then specialist endpoints for torrenting and region-shifting for streaming video services such as Netflix US and BBC iPlayer. However, we found the US Netflix endpoint to be somewhat unstable, repeatedly dropping our connection on a number of occasions. You can also select and connect to a server from a notification area icon in the right-click menu.

KeepSolid’s other settings allow you to switch from the Windows client’s default IKEv2 connection protocol to OpenVPN or KeepSolid’s somewhat slower Wise protocol, which the firm says offers “ultimate protection”. There’s also a kill switch to cut off all traffic in case the VPN goes down, a run on startup setting, and a Trusted Networks whitelist to which you can add specific Wi-Fi networks.

KeepSolid VPN Unlimited – Performance

KeepSolid has endpoints in 54 countries, including specialised servers designed to allows you to use streaming video services undetected. We were able to use its US streaming endpoint to catch up with Netflix’s latest shows and view iPlayer content over a similar UK endpoint. Shudder and Crunchyroll in the US worked as usual, but we weren’t able to access All 4 in the UK.

The VPN performed well in our speed tests, with its UK endpoints achieving 9.22MB/sec (73.76Mbps) in our FTP download test and 9.52MB/sec (76Mbps) via HTTP. Its Netherlands servers consistently gave us around 9.5MB/sec (76Mbps), and its US endpoints provided an impressive 8.33MB/sec (66.64Mbps) via HTTP and a respectable 5.97MB/sec (47.76Mbps) via FTP.

Why buy KeepSolid VPN Unlimited?

KeepSolid VPN Unlimited has some great value subscription offers, with a £77.42 three-year deal that works out at £2.15 per month. And, if you’re really taken by the company’s service and don’t want to worry about shopping around for a VPN in the foreseeable future, there’s even a £154.84 lifetime subscription.

If you’re after an annual subscription, its price is fairly average by current standards, at £46.45. Its monthly price of £7.73 is good, although not as good value to comparable monthly fees from VyprVPN and Windscribe.

But where KeepSolid really stands out is with its combination of fast performance and clients, or configuration guidance for a huge range of devices and operating systems including routers.

The company allows anonymous payment using Bitcoin, although note that its privacy policy reveals that it collects a lot of information – including your IP address, device information, the number of devices using the VPN, session times, network names, time zones, and more.

Verdict

With the addition of a kill switch and an upgraded interface, there’s next to nothing left to complain about when it comes to KeepSolid VPN Unlimited’s features.

If you’re an advanced user who wants a fast, widely compatible VPN that’s effective for most streaming services then KeepSolid VPN unlimited is a good option, particularly if you opt for its cost-effective three-year subscription.

However, KeepSolid keeps detailed user connection logs so if security is paramount then we recommend Private Internet Access or ExpressVPN, both of which have been shown not to keep logs during a court case.
